First but not the last. Reflections on Matariki Lead in 2024 by Lee Lawrence
I attended the SLNA Lead In June 2024 in Ōtaki Valley, it was my first one even though I have been a member in the past. A friend Helen from Christchurch also attended with me. We were the only South Island people not from the Nelson area.
It was such a lovely place to arrive at and then we were greeted so warmly by Chester and Ross that we immediately felt very welcome. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming and this helped a lot since we didn’t quite know what we were letting ourselves in for.
It turned out to be just the nourishment I needed since returning to choir leading this year after a long break. There were so many aspects that fed me on different levels, such as:
Observing seasoned leaders in action and learning from them without having to think about it too much.
Singing! Singing in a group instead of being the leader. And especially with such great singers, and great songs. This was unexpectedly the highlight for me.
Learning more about Matariki and learning Matariki songs. I chose sleep over the dawn ceremony which I regret!
Having some skilled and knowledgeable Te reo speakers and presentations.
The incredible yet unobtrusive work of Ben and Claire recording EVERYTHING. Knowing we didn’t have to record stuff ourselves or have the distraction of everyone doing that.
All of the resources which were presented, referenced and recorded for us. It’s quite phenomenal.
The easy but excellent organisation of the weekend.
The chats about all things choir and more. The connections. The laughs. The kai.
It was a cold wintry weekend but I left feeling warmed, nourished and inspired, far beyond expectation.
