Local Vocals Singing up a storm in Southland
Local Vocals is a community choir found in rural Southland and they have carved out a special niche in community singing that is clearly working for them.
When they are not regularly meeting each other for rehearsal you might say they specialize in event singing. This last year has been a particularly busy year for Local Vocals. Even though they are small they are mighty. They have two co-leaders and a committee to ensure a supported environment for singers.
Over the last year Local Vocals based in Gore has:
Led the singing of the national anthem for Citizen Ceremony at the Gore District Council. “This has been such a privilege to have an opportunity to do this but also to mix and mingle with many cultures represented during these events“.
Local Vocals were invited to sing at the at 95th birthday of the Gore Woman's Club. It was a well received event. There was a lovely duality of purpose to this event, having red scarves made to fit in with the party theme of red this was perfect . Members have worn them on two other occasions. We want to thank Jane and Suzanne from our choir for sewing these.
Along with other musicians we have performed Christmas Carols at the Gore Public Library learning "Carol of the Bells" for this occasion it was challenging but we did ourselves proud.
This last year we've also had the great privilege of singing with the Sunbeam Singers for Variety Fundraising Concert at the St James Theatre with proceeds going to the Woman's Refuge.
A first for us this year was participating in the Waimumu Anzac day service singing "Sons of Gallipoli". This and it was both meaningful and very well received.
We have also presented a selection of our best songs at Parata Rest Home which was appreciated prior to singing we met for lunch at a local Café using our vouchers we previously received from the fundraising concert, enjoying each other's company and enriching this overall experience together.
Although our group fluctuates during the year we remain a very enthusiastic and committed group very ably led by Jane Pullar and Michelle Cox supported by committee members Sandy, Kerralie and Valmai. We all love singing and always find another song to sing.
Information about Local Vocals received from Valmai, President and Committee Member.
There is no such thing as a small choir when you have purpose, intention and the power to create amazing opportunities and connections at events. I love that there is a place for us all. The people that lead and support the process of making that happen can't always see the power or impact of this work. It is mighty and magical and a vital part of our song leading tapestry we are all building together, with social impact, community building, relationship building, having a place to come to express, learn and replenish our wellbeing together.
Congratulations Local Vocals who have found a home in supporting each other through local events.
